In Part 3 of our Sustainability in Miami series, we interview the Whitman Family Development. In this series, we highlight the sustainability efforts of Miami and the community leaders helping move this forward. At EcoTech Visions, we are focused on creating jobs, sustaining communities and preserving the planet. There are other impactful businesses in Miami that have similar missions and if we all work together, we can become a model for sustainability not only in Miami, but around the world.
We sat down with another developer of Brickell City Centre, Matthew Whitman Lazenby. He is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Whitman Family Development. The Whitman family is most known for being the developer, owner and operator of the luxurious Bal Harbour Shops, which has been named the #1 shopping mall in the world by the International Council of Shopping Center.
The family development partnered with Swire Properties to bring Brickell City Centre, the $1.05 billion, mixed-use complex to downtown Miami. Bal Harbour was built in 1965 and has been a staple tourist destination in South Florida for years. The mall has an open-air design and mirrored this in the Brickell architecture. Headquarted in South Florida, the Whitman Family Development is familiar with the environmental issues in our city including rising sea level rise.
The Whitman family is bringing necessary attention to sustainable design and attributing to the green revolution we hope to have here. Their emphasis on being environmentally conscious is an example to other businesses, influencers to address the issues here and make a sustainable impact.
