Mankind is always finding ways to make themselves happy during the Yule tide season – but how about exploring different options on how to make the environment fun-loving? President Theodore Roosevelt did it by banning Christmas trees from the Whitehouse for environmental reasons. We all have a role to play in helping to save the environment, and we can begin by becoming informed on how to recycle – conserve water and fuel, and support companies that share the same vision of being environmentally responsible.
This holiday season let’s break from the norm and give gifts that are earth-friendly such as purchasing toys for the kids that are made from recycled milk jugs. You can find a wide selection of ecofriendly toys for kids at greentoys.com. Another company worth mentioning is Late for the Sky. They have an educational game titled “Earthopoly” that teaches children about the environment and adults can learn from it as well. Players become caretakers of the planet, collect carbon credits to trade for clean air and try to advance.
Many people like to give and receive clothes as presents. Thankfully, there’s a multitude of websites that cater to clothing made from recycled fabric. There are recycled shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, handbags – but it wouldn’t be complete until we add the finishing touch with biodegradable sneakers and shoes. OAT made the world’s first biodegradable sneakers that grow flowers when you plant them. If that wasn’t enough, they developed the first biodegradable leather shoes, bags that grow sunflowers, and even baby shoes with seeds to grow your baby’s Tree of Life.
We can’t forget that a belt is needed to hold up the clothing. C4 – creates and sells environmentally friendly, customizable plastic belts. Upon purchasing a belt on their website – you are given the option of 4 different charities to donate to including the Boys and Girls Club of America and the Human Rights Campaign. FEED makes environmental products and a portion of the proceeds from purchased items are donated to the United Nations World Food program to feed children around the world.
Eco-technology has advanced to the point where there’s touch screen computers – lap tops – computer accessories such as keyboards, cases and mice. Ecofriendly companies are manufacturing cell phones, watches, ball point pens, sun glasses, and speakers. There are solar powered lawn mowers and grills to have cookouts for birthday parties and on the 4th of July.
Deforestation has led to many species being endangered. These animal’s natural habitats have been destroyed so this holiday season you can be unique and adopt a wild animal such as a Black Bear or the Gray Wolf. You’re not literally going to adopt a wild animal – this is just a symbolic gesture through the Sierra Club. Once you adopt an animal from the Sierra Club you will receive an adorable plush animal that’s on the endangered species list.
Typically when our antiquated electronic equipment and gadgets get worn out, we toss them in the trash – but don’t rush to discard those items, because Amazon has a well thought-out concept that enables you to trade in your electronic devices in exchange for Amazon gift cards.
This is the season of giving, but a lot of focus has been placed at the cash register. It’s gotten to the point now where some people would love to celebrate the holidays, but they can’t due to monetary restrictions. Buying a tree (eco friendly or not) would be a luxury to some! Therefore, during this holiday season let us not forget to help the less fortunate – the unemployed – the families who are facing rental evictions and the families whose homes are being foreclosed on.
Say a Little Prayer Cards contains wisdom from 10 spiritual traditions ranging from Protestantism to Buddhism, and at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what race, creed, color or religion a person chooses to worship, because climate change and global warming affects all of humanity, and the entire ecosystem.
We hope these holiday gift guides help decrease our carbon footprint and increase awareness for a more sustainable environment. Happy Holidays!
